Sometimes it’s more convenient to have a real-time conversation with someone instead of writing an email, waiting for a response, and then writing again. For these situations, you’ll want to take advantage of Yahoo Messenger, a chat app that comes built into your Yahoo Mail. It doesn’t require any additional sign up – you can access it directly from your inbox! In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to chat in Yahoo Messenger step by step.
Chatting in Yahoo Messenger
To get started chatting, login to your Yahoo account if you haven’t already done so and go to your Yahoo Mail inbox. In the upper left-hand corner is a menu bar with several icons. The second to last is a little smiley face icon; this smiley face is the “face” of Yahoo Messenger. To open the messenger, click on this icon.
This will open a little popup window where you will verify your name, which will be shown on your Yahoo Messenger profile to the people you chat with. After that, you’ll see a window which may have some of your Yahoo contacts listed as suggestions for who to chat with. You don’t have to choose from them. To start a new chat, just click on the little pencil icon in the corner.
This will open a new message window from the bottom of your screen. First, you’ll have to choose someone to send the message to. You can select from suggested contacts or enter someone’s email address manually in the “Add people by email or contact” box.
After you’ve added a contact to receive your chat message, you can type your message in the bottom portion where it says “Add a message”.
If you ever need to add someone else to the conversation, forming a group chat, just click on the “add contact” icon, and you’ll be taken back to the add contacts screen to enter the email address of the new person you want to add to the chat.
You can also edit various aspects of the chat by clicking on the “information” icon.
And that’s all there is to sending instant messages and chatting on Yahoo Messenger! You can send messages this way whether your contacts are currently online or not. If they aren’t, they’ll get your messages the next time the sign in.
One last thing: Yahoo Messenger is a great way for sharing high resolution photos that might be too large to send via email. There is a little “photo” icon in the box where you type your message. Clicking on it will let you browse for the pictures you want to share.
If you’re like most people these days, you’re always on the go and sometimes it can be hard to find a desktop or laptop computer to check your email. Fortunately, you can check your Yahoo Mail from just about anywhere using their mobile applications for iPhone, iPad and Android. Downloading them is free, quick and easy and they’re very intuitive and user-friendly. Let’s go through each device one at a time.
Yahoo Mail application for iPhone
If you want to check your Yahoo email on your iPhone, you can find the free Yahoo app in the App Store the way you would look for any application. It will look something like this:
If you’re on your iPhone, you can just click “Install” to put the Yahoo mobile app on your device. If you’re using iTunes on a computer, you can download it to sync with your other devices later.
When you open the app for the first time, you’ll be prompted to enter your Yahoo ID (email address) and password, just like you would when you sign in online.
Yahoo mobile app for iPad
You can find Yahoo for iPad the same way you would for iPhone. Just use your iPad to go to the App Store and search for Yahoo. Your search result will look something like this:
Just click “Install” the same way you would download any other app on your iPad. Wait for the application to finish downloading and installing, and then open it. Once you enter your Yahoo username and password, you’re good to go!
Yahoo mail for Android
If you use an Android device, whether it’s a smartphone or a tablet, you’ll be downloading the Yahoo app from the Google Play Store. You can go online to play.google.com and search for “Yahoo”, or go directly to the Play Store app on your device and do the same. Your results will look similar to this:
As you can see, Yahoo has several different apps available for Android. If all you’re interested in is managing your email, you’ll want to click on the first option called “Yahoo Mail”. Feel free to download the other Yahoo apps later!
Here on the Yahoo Mail app detail page, you can see if the application is compatible with the device you’re using. If it is, you can simply click “Install” to download it to your device. When the installation is complete and you open the Yahoo Mail mobile app, you’ll have to sign in with your Yahoo email and password, and then you’re all set!
Nobody likes their email to get cluttered up with SPAM or junk mail. Yahoo has a built-in spam filter that’s pretty good, but if any junk emails slip past it and into your inbox, you can easily mark is as spam and get rid of it, while simultaneously teaching Yahoo Mail to improve its spam filter.
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to mark messages as spam, report spam and suspicious emails to Yahoo, and delete spam permanently from your email.
How to mark messages as spam in Yahoo
To start, make sure you’re logged into your Yahoo account and in your inbox or whichever folder you have messages that you would like to mark as spam.
Remember that marking messages as spam teaches Yahoo that you don’t want to see those emails in your inbox at all – if you just want to delete a wanted message, use the “delete” button, not the “spam” button.
If you have used your Yahoo email address to register on various websites or sign up for newsletters, you may very well already have messages that were sent to the spam folder automatically. Sometimes messages you actually want get sent there by mistake, so if you are ever expecting an email and it never comes, check your Spam folder just in case. You can find it in the left side bar underneath the Archive folder.
To mark an email as spam and send it to the Spam folder from your Inbox, check the box next to the unwanted message (or messages) and then click on the “Spam” button in the options bar at the top of your inbox.
All this does is send the message to the Spam folder and improve Yahoo’s filter so you receive fewer messages like that in the future. If you want to report a sender for being abusive with spam, if you think the email is part of a phishing scam, or if you think your account might have been hacked, there are also options for this. You can find them by clicking the dropdown arrow next to the Spam button and selecting the option that’s appropriate for your situation.
You can also mark a message as spam or report it using the same options while reading the email. With the unwanted message open, you’ll have the same Spam button in the top menu as in your Inbox.
After you click the Spam button, either from the message or from your Inbox, you’ll receive a little notification letting you know your action was successful.
And the spam message will be removed from your Inbox and placed in the Spam folder.
How to mark an email as safe (not spam)
As we mentioned above, sometimes messages that you actually want get sent to spam by mistake. Sometimes we accidentally click on the Spam button ourselves. Whatever the case, if you ever need to get something out of your Spam folder, doing so is easy. Go into the Spam folder in the left navigation bar, check the box next to the desired email or emails, and click “Not Spam” in the options bar. This will move the message back into your Inbox.
How to delete spam emails from Yahoo Mail
Spam is automatically set to be deleted once a month (although you can change this to every week or two weeks in your mail security settings), so there’s not really any need to delete your junk mail manually. However, if you want to for some reason, all you have to do is go into the Spam folder, select the message or messages you want to permanently delete by checking the box next to them, and clicking the “Delete” button.
Now that you know how to label emails as spam in Yahoo Mail, you’re well on your way to having a nice, clean Inbox with only the mail you want to receive. Over time, Yahoo will learn what you consider junk and what you don’t, so you’ll have to go through this process less often. Enjoy your new, spam-free inbox!
When you use your Yahoo email account as your primary email address, you’ll find that your inbox gets full pretty quickly and it’s easy to lose track of your most important messages. Luckily, Yahoo has two different ways of saving and keeping track of your important emails, and we’ll show you how to use both methods below, step by step. The first method is called “Archive”, and the second is “Star”.
For both the archive and the star procedure, your first step is to login to your Yahoo account and go to Yahoo Mail main screen by clicking on the “Mail” icon in the upper right-hand corner of the yahoo.com homepage.
How to archive emails in Yahoo
The “Archive” in your Yahoo Mail is like a huge digital filing cabinet where you can store any messages you want to hold onto, just in case, but don’t want them to be cluttering up your inbox all the time. Any message that is archived will not appear in your inbox with your regular email anymore, but will be safely tucked away and accessible anytime you need it by going to the “Archive” section in the side navigation bar in your email.
The archive button is found in your main options panel at the top of your inbox/message view screen.
There are a few different ways you can archive messages in Yahoo Mail, but they are all easy and intuitive and they all have the exact same result: storing a message (or messages) safely in your Archive folder and removing them from your Inbox.
The first way is to archive a single message from your Inbox (or any folder you’ve created in your Yahoo Mail). All you have to do is click on the box next to the message you want to archive, and once it is selected, click on the “Archive” button we mentioned earlier.
You can also archive multiple messages simultaneously. Just check off multiple emails, whichever ones are important and you want to save for later, and then click the “Archive” button just like before.
The last way to archive an important email is directly from the message. Let’s say you get a new message, and as you read it, you realize that you want to save it in the archive in case you need to reference it later. You can save the email by simply clicking on the same “Archive” button while you have the message open.
After you have archived an email or several emails, you’ll get a notification from Yahoo letting you know you did it correctly and giving you the option to undo it if you want. Also note that the email I archived no longer appears in my Inbox. If I want to read it later, I will need to go to the Archive folder.
How to star messages in Yahoo Mail
The second way to save important emails in Yahoo works a little differently than archiving. Sometimes important messages are important because they require somewhat immediate or urgent attention. In this case, moving them to the archive could be a bad move – out of sight, out of mind. Archiving is better suited for messages with important information that you might need to reference at some point in the future, but nothing will happen if you forget about its existence until you need it.
Starring is a better option for saving and highlighting important messages without removing them from your inbox. As the name implies, these messages get marked with a star symbol, so you can find them more easily even if you have tons of emails in your inbox, and you can see at a glance what is urgent and what is not.
As with archiving, there are a few different ways you can go about starring an important message in Yahoo Mail, but they all have the same result: your message will be found in your inbox just like before, but will now have a yellow star next to it as a constant visual reminder of its importance and a sort of bookmark to help you locate it easily.
The first way to star an email in Yahoo is very similar to archiving. First, check the box of the message or messages you want to star. Then, click on the “More…” option in the top menu, and select “Star” from the dropdown menu.
See how your message still appears in your inbox as it normally would, but now it has a star that makes it easier to see?
The second way is even easier. Find the important email you want to save, and hover your cursor over it. Some symbols will appear in black between the sender and the subject: a magnifying glass, a trash can, and a star. To star the message, all you have to do is click on the star. Easy!
The last way is to star an important email as you read it, just like we did with archiving. While you have a message open, if you decide it’s urgent and you want to mark it with a star, just click on the same “More…” button and select “Star” exactly as you did in the first method.
And that’s all there is to saving important messages in Yahoo Mail. If you have an email with information you might want to access in the future, but don’t need to see every day in your regular email, archiving is your solution. For emails that require urgent attention but might get lost in a crowded inbox, starring is the answer to your problem. And luckily for all of us, archiving and starring important emails in Yahoo couldn’t be easier.
One of the great things about email platforms like Yahoo Mail is that you don’t have to keep track of all of your contacts’ information by memory or in an agenda – you can store all the information you need right in your email! This makes it easy to communicate with everyone via email, but can also come in handy with remembering birthdays, phone numbers and other useful information.
Yahoo mail has a couple different ways you can add contacts, so let’s look at how to add Yahoo contacts, step by step.
How to add new contacts in Yahoo
As always, make sure you are logged into your Yahoo account and enter your inbox by clicking the “Mail” icon on the Yahoo homepage. Near the upper right-hand corner of the screen, you’ll see a series of icons. The second icon from the left looks like a little agenda or address book – click on that icon to go to the “Contacts” page.
Once you are on the Contacts page, you’ll be able to see all of the contacts you have added to your Yahoo account.
Even if you haven’t added any contacts, you might have some contacts in your list for any email addresses you sent a message to with your Yahoo email.
The first way we’ll use to add contacts is the “old-fashioned” way: a basic, manual addition of a new contact. Find the button above the left sidebar that says “New Contact” and click on it.
This will take you to the form where you can enter information about your new contact.
You can fill in as much or as little information as you like. Typically, you would want at least a first and last name and email address.
Scroll down and enter as much information as you want, and when you’re finished, click “Save”.
Now when you’re on your Contacts main page, you should see your new contact appear in the list.
How to import contacts to Yahoo
The second way to add contacts in Yahoo is a bulk import from another account you already have.
For example, if you have your important contacts in a Gmail account, you could import them from Gmail into Yahoo.
In this example, I’m going to import contacts from my Facebook account, but you would follow the same basic steps for any import. Start by clicking the “Import” button next to the account you want to use for your contacts.
This will open a new window asking you to sign in and for permission to let Yahoo access your contacts (or “friends list”, in the case of a Facbeook import). Click “Accept” or sign in, depending on the account you are using, to start the contacts import into Yahoo Mail.
You’ll see that Yahoo is now importing all of the contacts from your other account to your Yahoo contacts list. The time this takes will depend on how many contacts you have, but shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.
When the import is finished, all of the contacts from your other account will appear in your “All Contacts” list in Yahoo. Easy!
How to delete Yahoo contacts
Sometimes it’s also necessary to delete contacts. Whether the email address is out of date or you simply don’t need to keep in touch with a person any longer, deleting a contact in Yahoo Mail is simple. Here’s how:
Scroll through your contacts list until you find the contact you wish to delete.
Click on the contact to open up their details/options. You’ll see that the box next to their name in the list is now checked off (meaning they are selected in the list). Click on the “Delete” button in the options menu bar.
If you really want to delete this contact and all of their information, click “Delete” again in the confirmation window that will pop up.
And that’s all there is to it!
You can also do a bulk contact delete by selecting multiple names from your contacts list and choosing the delete option in the right-hand window. You can select all contacts in view (up to 500) by selecting the empty check box above the actual contacts list. If you have more than 500 contacts to delete, just repeat this step in increments of 500 until you’re done.
