How to use the basic Settings in Yahoo Mail

Just like any service, YMail integrates a Settings panel to control every aspect of the platform in terms of visuals, security, privacy, notifications, inbox, contacts and more for the user to customize the experience and functionality in general. For best convenience, Yahoo Mail includes some basic Settings that can be easily accessed and modified, with options that are very important to have at hand at some point.

The basic Settings in Yahoo Mail as a quick access panel allows the user to modify parameters very easily, with a click of an icon that is always present on the inbox and home page. To do it, click on the Settings Menu icon placed almost to the top right and below the Home button and a menu will be displayed.

In this menu all the basic configurations will be available to change quickly and specifically addressing visuals. To begin with, we have the “Theme” function that let the user change the color and general aspect of the platform, along with Light, Medium and Dark effects for more comfortable use in day and night. Click on the color theme and the platform change automatically.

If we scroll down a little bit on the menu we find the second visual function addressed, which is “Message Layout” and changes the way emails are shown. “List” is the default message layout, with other two more that are “Right” and “Bottom”. Click on any of them to apply it, here is how they look.

The next function on the basic Settings menu is the “Inbox Spacing” and allows to change the separation between messages on the inbox or any other folder in Yahoo Mail, customizing the look of the platform in general and perfect for people with visual disabilities or for better organization.

“Small” is the default inbox spacing setting on Yahoo Mail, with other two: “Medium” and “Large” this is how the look when they are applied by simply clicking on the circle icon below the graphic example.

The last function on the basic Settings panel is “Message tabs” and is definitely very important for those who are very productive and need multitasking, since through this functions the user can open as many emails as they need at once, while checking other folders and answer different messages.

To turn tabs on, click on the switch icon on the “Message tabs” function to activate it and start using it.

Done this, when we open an email it will not take the whole space on the inbox, and instead it will get opened on an independent tab, so we can have access to as many messages and folders we want, perfect for multitasking. This is how it looks, when a message is click:

Now, with that message open we can easily go to the inbox and such email will remain accessible at any moment, thanks to the tabs on top of the inbox.

What Unread, Starred, Draft and Sent functions are for YMail

Ymail as emailing service offers different tools for users to manage their inbox and messages properly, with proper instruments and folders that allow them organize all the information that are created by default. For example, the Unread, Starred, Draft and Sent folders are available from the very beginning as main functions in Yahoo Mail.

Purpose of the folders in Yahoo Mail

The default Unread, Starred, Draft and Sent folders in Yahoo Mail are containers where messages can be put or moved into, automatically or by the users to have a better and more organized experience in every way. At the moment of signing in and get to the inbox and Yahoo Mail home page. This is how and where they appear:

Depending on the actions carried out on the platform, the messages automatically can be moved to one folder or the other. Logically, sent emails will be moved to the Sent folder after they are sent, while drafts are unsent messages that remain in the Draft folder until they are completed.

Unread folder

The Unread folder is the one where unread messages are saved after they are moved from the inbox, in order to keep it organize and frequently by the user.

To move a message from the inbox to the Unread folder is very simple. Go to the inbox, choose the message by selecting the check box on its left, and then click on the “More options” button next to the Spam option.

A set of options will be shown, click on the first one “Mark as unread” and the message now appears on the Unread folder.

Starred folder

The Starred folder is a system where the user can keep their preferred messages in one placed, by giving them the starred condition. To do it, go the folder where the message the preferred message is and click on the little start icon, which is placed next to the Subject. It will automatically appear on the Starred folder.

Draft folder

The Draft folder is the container where incomplete messages appear before they get sent or when they are being created, in order to save text, attachment and other information of the email automatically after leaving the writing panel.

Sent folder

The Sent folder is the one that keeps every sent message by the user saved and reachable, going there automatically after is sent. So, for a message to appear on this container mandatorily must be sent previously, since emails cannot be moved manually to this location.

If we send a message, we can see how is moved to the Sent folder in the next images, in case there is the need to resend it or for the purpose of having a record of messages that have been shared.

What Archive, Spam and Trash functions are for on YMail

Yahoo Mail is a great platform that includes plenty of tools to manage the messages properly, in order to keep everything clean and maintain a great work flow and general productivity. The folders of Archive, Spam and Trash are containers that carry this function quite well that are created by default when the Yahoo account is generated. Let´s see how we can use them to take the most benefit out of them.

The Archive folder is the specialized container in Yahoo Mail where users can save their important messages permanently, in case of requiring them for later use and need to keep them organized in just one place.

To move an email to the Archive folder, follow the next steps:

  • Access the folder where the message to move is located, in this case the inbox and select it by clicking on the check box placed next to the sender´s name.

  • Now, on the options panel located on the top of the inbox, click on “Archive” and the message will automatically be saved there.

  • If we go to the Archive container now, the message that has been just moved appears on it.

Spam folder

This is one of the most important folders in Yahoo Mail, since on it the system moves automatically messages that can be considered Spam, meaning in possible risk for the user, useless purpose or ads.

Fortunately, the platform counts one with this folder to send possible Spam messages there seamlessly or manually by the user. Let´s know how:

  • If we notice there is a Spam message in our inbox, moving it is very easy. To do it, select the email by clicking on its check box as in the previous step.

  • On the tool panel placed at the top of the inbox, click on “Move” and then on “Spam” and the message will be moved.

  • Since Spam messages can be harmful and risk personal information, next to the folder´s name on the main menu there is a trash icon, which allow to empty the Spam container easily.

Trash or Deleted Items folder

In many occasions, we can see that our inbox or other folders or filled with messages that are no longer necessary, making a mess and requiring some deleting.

  • To send a message to the Trash or Deleted Items folder, the only step is to click on the trash can icon on every message, as it can be seen in the image and automatically the message will be moved. In this way, in case a deleted message is needed it can be found on the folder for recovery.

By clicking on the “Documents” option the left main menu a similar thing happens with the Photos function, but instead files with document formats are shown as .doc, .xls, .pdf and more on a list, very fast and useful to find any information or file of interest.

Either we need photos or documents, with this tool we are going to be able to download the files on the list, by clicking it the one of interest and then select the option “Download” on tool panel on the right.

How to use the Folders function on Yahoo Mail

Message containers are very useful when it comes to email services as Yahoo Mail, and on the platforms the Folders function is the one to use to manage those containers. To begin with, click on “New folder” and then type the new folder´s name which in this will “Business”. Press Enter on the keyboard and it will be automatically saved.

At any given time, changing the customizable folders´ names is possible by putting the cursor on the arrow icon and carry out other functions, such as “Delete folder”, “Move folder” or “Create subfolder”.

After the folder is created, moving an email or many of them at the same time into it is possible. Click on the “Move” option after selecting the messages and click on the folder. The emails will be automatically moved.

To start using all the options of this tab, obviously we are going to need add some contacts as a process that is quite easy. To add someone new, click on the “Add a new contact button” on the bottom of the tab.

In this way, a creation panel is going to appear where the platform will require entering the information related to the contact to add, such as first and surname, birth date, webpage, email address, mobile phone number and more. When the information in finally entered, click on “Save” and the contact will now be available.

Now, on the top of the panel there are tabs called “Top”, “All” and “Lists”, where contacts are ordered by importance, in alphabetical order and also as customizable lists that can be created by the users, respectively. To carry this last one option, click on “Lists” and then on the “Create list” button down below.

Using the Calendar on Yahoo Mail

To use the Calendar on YMail and start taking advantage of it, click on the calendar icon on the panel located to the right.

Creating a new event is very easy: click on “Create event” at the top of the Calendar and start adding information about it, such as name, date, invitees and a proper description. Click on “Save” to save the event and getting alerts when they arrive.

For those who like to see the Calendar in a big way to manage the events better, it is possible on Yahoo Mail by clicking on the “Go to full view” option at the bottom of the Calendar panel, and like this it will get bigger and more comfortable to manage.
